Katte raak besmet in die eerste ses maande van hul lewens wanneer hul knaagdiere soos rotte en muise en voëls vang en vreet en die Toxoplasma gondii protosoa besmet is. Katte kan ook in grond waar hul krap besmet raak as hul blootstelling kry aan die oösiste in die uitskeiding van ander  geïnfekteerde katte deur hul mis.

Die toksoplasmose parasiet voltooi nie sy lewensiklus in die prooi van katte  nie, maar in die maagwande van die kat waar dit oösiste vorm wat deur die kat se mis uitgeskei word.

Katte skei oösiste vir ongeveer 3 weke in hulle mis uit nadat hulle die infeksie opgedoen het. Daarna word hul immuun. Hierdie oösiste gaan eers deur ‘n proses van sporulasie (vorming van spore) vir ongeveer drie dae, voordat die protosoa parasiet besmetlik raak.

Katte kan weer tydens hul leeftyd besmet raak met die parasiet, maar na immuniteit baie minder oösiste uitskei. Grond asook sandbakke van katte sal besmet raak en kan sowat ‘n jaar oorleef en die mens kan infekteer.

Opsommend

  • Oösiste word nie op n kat se pels gedra nie.
  • Binnenshuise katte kan nie maklik met die toksoplasmose parasiet besmet raak nie.
  • Die mens kan nie toksoplasmose aan ‘n ander mens oordra nie.

Interessant van besmette rotte en muise is dat hul baie skugter raak wanneer hul besmet geraak het. Die Literatuur wil die hê dat dit ‘n evolusionêre taktiek is van die parasiet om te oorleef in die Natuur. In hierdie verband speel katte, slange en uile ‘n uiters belangrike rol in die beheer van die en verskeie ander soönotiese siektes wat deur hierdie diere aan die mens oorgedra kan word.

Besmetting by die mens

In die VSA het meer as 60 miljoen mense positief getoets teen die parasiet, wat met ander woorde teenliggaampies wys in toetse.

Die grootste risiko by besmetting van toksoplasmose by die mens is by die eet van rou vleis wat nie goed gaar gemaak is nie. Beeste word nie deur die parasiet besmet nie. Skape wel. Hul word besmet deur voer en water wat met mis besmet word. Wind speel ook hierin n baie belangrike rol in die verspreiding hiervan.

Besmetting by skape asook varke

In Australië, Nieu Seeland, Britse Eilande en Noorweë word toksoplasmose verantwoordelik gehou vir tot 20% van stilgeboortes en aborsies by skaap en boktroppe. Aborsie vind plaas wanneer die fetus (plasentitus) infekteer word in die eerste tweede weke van hul dragtigheid. Toksoplasmose kom in byna alle warmbloedige spesies voor. Sommige is net meer vatbaar vir toksoplasmose.

Rotte, beeste, perde en buffels toon baie weerstandigheid teen die parasiet, wyl katte die teenoorgestelde is en baie vatbaar vir besmetting. Honde wat onder stres is van bosluiskoors,  bosluisbytkoors en honde siekte (distemper) mag hul meer vatbaar maak vir toksoplasmose. Mense wat besmet is moet weet dat die toksoplasmose parasiet se oösiste enige gedeelte van die liggaam kan affekteer.  Spiere, brein, die hart.

‘n Gesonde immuunsisteem sal die parasiet onderdruk en die mens en sy diere gesond hou. Verswak jou gesondheid en gebeur iets wat die immuunsisteem onder druk plaas, kan ‘n herlewing veroorsaak van die parasiet in die menslike liggaam ernstige nagevolge hê.

Laastens

Sandbakke van katte moet veilig gehanteer word en nie in die tuin begrawe word waar dit onveilig kan wees vir ander nie.
