Background

The cause of diabetes remains in many ways a mystery.

But does this mean that the only answer to high sugar and diabetes is insulin?

In the past 20 years in the United States, public dissatisfaction with the cost of prescription medications and its many side-effects causes an interest to return to natural or organic remedies. This has led to an increase in the use of herbal medicine.

In Literature, causative factors are inflammation, oxidative stress, sugar intake (in many forms), various chemical substances and compounds, prescription drugs, stress, genetics, and fluctuations in the gut microbiome as some of the reasons why man and animal suffer from high blood sugar and diabetes.

Almost all these factors can be influenced positively by preventive actions.

Activities in physical exercise, water intake, probiotic intake, colostrum intake, use of fulvic acid, proper nutrition, well-planned sugar free diets, positive attitudes and various herbal supplements can successfully assist in managing diabetes and or high blood sugar.

Supplements

There are many natural supplements that can ensure functional insulin uptake and reduce insulin resistance in the blood.

Introduction

“The World Health Organization estimated that 80% of people worldwide rely on herbal medicines for some part of their primary health care. In Germany, about 600 to 700 plant-based medicines are available and are prescribed by some 70% of German physicians.

Covid-19 pandemic

The shock realisation of the Covid-19 pandemic prove that modern medicine cannot offer functional treatment in many cases, when man needed it the most.

The pandemic highlighted the importance of a healthy functional immune system, good food, exercise, and natural plant-based and herbal treatments to overcome and survive the openings modern medicine leave us.

Almost one fourth of pharmaceutical drugs are derived from botanicals

What is herbal medicine?

Herbal medicine, also termed “botanical medicine” or “phytomedicine”, refers to utilizing plant’s seeds, berries, roots, leaves, bark, or flowers for medicinal purposes.

Herbalism is not about synthetic chemical compounds and or pharmaceuticals.

Herbal cures are a centuries-old form of natural medicinal therapy. An approach that targets the whole body as an integrative system, and not only specific symptoms.

Modern medication tends to target only symptoms.

Diabetes, prediabetes, and high blood sugar demands that the focus should be on the body as whole, as an integrative unit, to target and address the health issues related to diabetes.

The Aim of this Study

Is to find natural products to address the various insulin related challenges in the body.

What is the history of herbal medicine?

Herbalism and plant use have a history of almost 5000 years to mankind. Modern medicine is known to man for almost 100 years.

Successful plant based medical treatments and uses has a long tradition outside conventional medicine. Ancient Chinese and Egyptian papyrus writings describe medicinal uses for plants as early as 3,000 BC. Indigenous ancient cultures (such as African and Native American) used herbs in their healing rituals.

Many cultures developed traditional medical systems such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine.

But do herbs really work?

Whole herbs contain many ingredients, and many factors define how effective a herb will be. Environment, climate, bugs, and soil quality, harvesting procedures as well as how the products were processed.

Plant-based herbs and natural products alone, are only components of good health.

A balanced lifestyle towards real healthy foods, fruit and vegetables, sugar intake, alcohol use, free radical management and many more factors work together, to produce a beneficial support system in the management or the prevention of diabetes, prediabetes, or high blood sugar.

Diabetes types

Diabetes is a metabolic disease that causes high blood sugar. Diabetes, regardless of the type or status of diabetes, is having too much glucose or blood sugar circulating in your bloodstream.

Food consumed is turned into blood sugar to be used for energy. Blood glucose is the main source of food and energy in the body and comes from the food you eat.

Insulin, a hormone, is produced by the pancreas.

The function of insulin is to move glucose or blood sugar from the blood into living cells, to be used as energy.

With diabetes two factors are of importance.

  • the pancreas is not producing enough insulin, or
  • a person with insulin resistance, prevents the cells in die body to use the insulin the pancreas produces.

Both factors ensures that not enough glucose or blood sugar enters the cells as cell food in the body, leading and leaving the person with many possible medical complications.

High blood sugar and or diabetic complications can include:

  • Cardiovascular issues such as chest pain, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries).
  • Nerve damage (neuropathy) that causes numbing and tingling that starts at toes or fingers then spreads.
  • Kidney damage (nephropathy) that can lead to kidney failure or the need for dialysis or transplant.
  • Eye damage (retinopathy) that can lead to blindness, cataracts, glaucoma.
  • Foot damage including nerve damage, poor blood flow and poor healing of cuts and sores.
  • Skin infections.
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Hearing loss.
  • Depression.
  • Dementia.
  • Dental problems.

Natural Dietary Supplements

There are several supplements that can be taken to balance or better the absorption of blood glucose in the body.

To name a few.

  • Chromium: – Enhances the glucose tolerance factor in the body, which ensures that insulin is working better.
  • Magnesium: – Magnesium deficiency contributes in many ways to various sugar or diabetic related illnesses.  This is as a result from frequent urination caused by high glucose levels. Low magnesium levels therefore worsen blood sugar control in Type 2 diabetes. Magnesium deficiency prevent adequate insulin secretion in the pancreas. It results in the build-up of blood glucose in tissues, resulting in insulin resistance.
  • Vanadium: Normalized blood sugar levels in animals with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Vanadium increases insulin sensitivity, thus, lowering the insulin requirements of a diabetic person.
  • Fulvic acid: – Contain more than 70 minerals, amino acids, sugars, peptides, nucleic acids, phytochemical compounds, vitamins, and fragments of plant DNA. Most of these minerals occur in ionic form, where fulvic acid modulate the immune system, influence the oxidative state of cells, and improve gastrointestinal functions, factors which are all hallmarks of diabetes.
  • Enzymes: – Coenzyme Q10, or CoQ10 is a vitamin-like substance that’s in meats and seafood. CoQ10 acts as an antioxidant and support the production of energy in cells.

Plant Foods

Several plant-based bark, leaves and roots are beneficial to balance blood sugar naturally, whilst most plant foods are rich in fibre, vitamins, and minerals. Some studies indicate that certain plant foods help the body to fight inflammation by using insulin, the hormone that controls blood sugar.

  • Clove oil extracts (eugenol) have been found to help insulin work and to lower glucose, total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides.
  • A compound in coffee (not caffeine) also enhances insulin sensitivity and lower the chances of developing type 2 diabetes.

Plant products that is beneficial enhancing insulin sensitivity are

  • Ginseng.
  • Brewer’s yeast
  • Buckwheat
  • Broccoli, and related greens
  • Cinnamon
  • Cloves
  • Coffee
  • Okra
  • Leafy green vegetables
  • Fenugreek seeds
  • Sage

Diagnosis and treatment

Blood sugar control requires an understanding a few general numbers that indicate how much glucose is in a person’s blood.

A diagnosis can be accomplished through and inexpensive test with a small tester designed to measure blood glucose or blood sugar with a drop of blood at certain times of the day.

People who don’t have diabetes or pre-diabetes (abnormal high blood sugar) keep their blood sugars between 60 – 100 mg/dl overnight and before meals. And, keeping the levels less than 140 mg/dl after meals.

Ecohealth Blood Sugar Management

The goal of the Ecohealth Blood Sugar Management is to manage blood sugar with a group of selected herbs well studied in Literature.

High blood sugar harm blood vessels and, cause several serious health complications that requires expensive medical treatment. Tobacco use must also be considered to be stopped to avoid serious complications.

There is no specific diet for diabetes.

People and pets should follow a diabetic meal plan as recommended by a competent nutritionist.

In general, patients with diabetes should:

  • Limit sugar intake
  • Avoid sodium or salt intake, to keep blood pressure under control
  • Read all labels carefully, as many “sugar-free” or “fat-free” products are not necessarily low in calories or carbohydrates
  • Contain blood glucose levels with physical activity, such as weight training, or resistance training.
  • Drinking lots of clean water, as high blood sugar levels tend to cause severe dehydration. Clean water is the best option for people with diabetes. Water won’t raise blood sugar levels and drinking enough water, can help your body eliminate excess glucose through urine.
  • Avoid smoking and the use of tobacco should be limited and better avoided, as it is known to complicate and undermine blood sugar levels.

Alternative health care in the medical fraternity

There are no studies available for South Africa. Recent studies in the United States and Europe support the prevalent use of alternative health care.

  • In a 1994 survey of physicians from a wide array of medical specialties revealed that more than 60% recommended alternative therapies to their patients at least once in the preceding year, while 38% had done so in the previous month.
  • Forty-seven percent of these physicians also reported using alternative therapies themselves, while 23% incorporated them into their practices.

With this background in mind

The costs of insulin and blood sugar medicine is out of reach for many South Africans. Supportive products also.

There is a serious quest for natural and herbal supplements in South Africa.

Cheaper products than can lower and stabilise blood sugar naturally and with no to little side effects. Also, products that can enhance immune system functions as well. In the case of diabetes and high blood glucose, the health of the blood circulatory system as well.

Herbal supplements and blood sugar control

Ecohealth selected a few nutraceutical herbs that is well studied and well defined in Literature to stabilise blood sugar in a natural way.

Ecohealth Blood Glucose Stabiliser

The following herbs and nutraceuticals are selected.

  1. Black seed extract (Nigella sativa), an antioxidant that is traditionally been used to manage numerous health conditions. The primary active constituent of Black seed, thymoquinone, exhibited potential healthy inflammation support via suppression of inflammatory mediators (IL-2, IL-6, PGE2) and positive effects in asthma due to suppression of most active cytokines and broncho-dilatory effects.

Several preclinical and clinical studies demonstrated that black seed extract helps manage healthy blood glucose levels, regulates blood cholesterol levels, and prevents oxidative stress, which helps in maintaining excellent metabolic health.

Black seed oil intake in the seed, also improve male fertility without any adverse effects.

  •  Milk-thistle or Silymarin

Medical research suggests that milk thistle, combined with traditional treatment, can improve the effects of diabetes. Studies with silymarin proves a decrease in blood sugar levels and an improvement in healthy cholesterol in people with Type 2 diabetes.

Milk-thistle improve insulin resistance, a crucial factor in type 2 diabetes.

Milk-thistle have a protective effect on the pancreas. It also has a chemo protectant effect that improve pancreatic functions after exposure to toxic agents that leads to cell damage as it increases serum insulin.

Milk-thistle also reduces serum glucose and increase antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione, an important molecule that helps to fight free radicals.

Glutathione as an antioxidant

  • Is produced by the liver and nerve cells in the central nervous system. It is made up of three amino acids: L-cysteine, glycine, and L-glutamate.
  • Glutathione plays part in the metabolism of toxins and cancer-causing substances
  • Natural creation and repair of DNA
  • Production of protein and prostaglandin, a compound with hormone-like effects
  • Activation of enzymes
  • The breakdown of nutrients
  • The regulation of important body processes, such as the immune response
  • Antioxidants, such as glutathione are important in keeping the pH-levels in cells in balance.

Free radicals are unstable molecules.

  • People who are suffering from diabetes, prediabetes, and high blood sugar, should prevent the accumulation of free radicals in their bodies.
  • When more free radicals exist than antioxidants in the body, oxidative cell damage occurs. This can lead to inflammation and a variety of health issues, which includes high blood pressure, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease.
  •  Tribulus terrestris and blood Pressure

While the herb has been used for thousands of years. Tribulus terrestris is a small leafy plant also known as “puncture vine, Gokshura, caltrop and goat’s head” and has been used for thousands of years.

Tribulus terrestris have a variety of health benefits.

In animal studies, tribulus terrestris have successfully lowered blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels, reduce blood sugar to significant low levels, lower cholesterol, rehabilitated hormone levels as well as increasing sexual function and libido.

Important factor regarding tribulus terrestris:

Literature indicates that tribulus terrestris can decrease blood sugar to dangerously low levels when used with medicines associated with diabetes.

  •  Berberine

Berberine is a bitter-tasting and yellow-coloured chemical. Berberine has been a part of Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine for thousands of years. It works in the body in multiple ways and can make changes within the body’s cells.

Many studies of berberine indicates that berberine can treat several metabolic health conditions, including diabetes, obesity, various heart problems and gut health.

Berberine in studies shown the ability to damage the DNA and protein of various bacteria and inhibit the growth of antibiotic resistant bacteria, such as “Staphylococcus aureus”. S. aureus can cause many health problems, including, sepsis, pneumonia, meningitis, and a range of serious skin conditions.

In studies, berberine shows much promise in diabetic treatment, especially for those who cannot take existing anti-diabetic drugs due to heart disease, liver failure, or kidney problems.

People use berberine for diabetes, prediabetes, and high blood sugar. Berberine activates the “AMP-activated protein kinase”, which help regulates how the body uses blood sugar.

Berberine has a “balanced distribution” into several targets in the body, that will address many health conditions in the body, with no side effects.

Berberine also regulates how the body uses blood glucose.

It reduces swelling, lowering high levels of cholesterol, eliminating dangerous fats in blood, lower high blood pressure, fight cancer sores and have a positive effect on eliminating liver diseases.

Can Imitate Insulin and Increase Insulin Sensitivity. Cinnamon is high in cinnamaldehyde and filled with many antioxidants, as well as anti-inflammatory properties.

In people with type 2 diabetes, 1 gram (half a teaspoon of cinnamon per day) prove to have beneficial effects on blood markers.

Cinnamon is known to reduce levels of total cholesterol

  • Reduce LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides, also known as the “bad” cholesterol
  • Whilst the “good” or HDL cholesterol in the body, remains stable.

Cinnamon is known to lower blood sugar and fight off diabetes

  • by imitating the effects of insulin and
  • increase the blood glucose transport into cells
  • It also helps to lower blood sugar, by increasing insulin sensitivity, thus making insulin more efficient at moving blood glucose into cells.
  • Devils claw

Devil’s claw is also described in Literature as a herb that have a high potency to lower blood sugar. sends out many warnings as Tr as may lower blood sugar. If you take medications to treat diabetes, taking devil’s claw may raise the risk of developing low blood sugar.

“As in the case of terrestris tribulus, the use of devil’s claw can reduce blood sugar to dangerously low levels, when used with medicines associated with diabetes.”

Devil’s claw is also known for pain relief, with fewer side effects associated with pain medication.

Gout, uric acid levels and diabetes.

The importance of a healthy diet

Gout and diabetes are two different health problems.

  • Gout is a type of arthritis that happens when called uric acid builds up in the blood. It causes severe joint pain, especially in the big toe.
  • Type 2 diabetes happens when your body doesn’t produce or use the hormone insulin, a hormone that controls your blood sugar.

Gout causes inflammation in the body.

Literature has it that people with type 2 diabetes often have high levels of uric acid in their blood, which could be due to extra fat.

Overweight people create more insulin.

That makes it harder for your kidneys to get rid of uric acid, which may lead to gout.

Persons who participated in the Framingham Heart Study in 1984, shown to have higher uric acid levels in their blood and were more likely to get Type 2 diabetes.

Specifically, for every 1 milligram per decilitre (mg/dL) rise in uric acid, the chance of diabetes went up by 20%.

In another report with more than 35,000 people with gout, Scientists found that women with gout were 71% more likely to get diabetes and men with gout had a 22% higher chance.

Manage and Prevent Gout and Diabetes

It’s important to keep your uric acid and blood sugar under control with a healthy lifestyle and habits to prevent gout, high blood sugar and diabetes.

Habits and lifestyle are the best way to prevent the possibilities.

Eat a healthy diet.

  • Include foods that are low in calories and fat, but high in fibre, to lower your risk of diabetes.
  • Fatty fish contain omega-3 fats that can help reduce inflammation and other risk factors of heart disease and stroke. Plus, it’s a great source of protein, which is important for managing blood sugar.
  • Leafy green vegetables are rich in nutrients like vitamin C as well as antioxidants that protect your heart and eye health.
  • Avocados have less than 1 gram of sugar and are associated with improved overall diet quality. Avocados may also have properties specific to diabetes prevention.
  • Eggs may improve risk factors for heart disease, promote good blood sugar management, protect eye health, and keep you feeling full.
  • Chia seeds contain high amounts of fibre, which may help you lose weight. They also help maintain blood glucose levels.
  • Beans are cheap, nutritious, and have a low glycaemic index, making them a healthy option for people with diabetes.
  • Yogurt may promote healthy blood sugar levels, reduce risk factors for heart disease, and help with weight management.
  • Nuts are a healthy addition to a balanced diet. They’re high in fiber and can help reduce blood sugar and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.
  • Broccoli is a low calorie, low carb food with high nutrient value. It’s loaded with healthy plant compounds that may help protect against various diseases.
  • Extra-virgin olive oil contains healthy oleic acid. It has benefits for blood pressure and heart health.
  • Flaxseeds may help reduce inflammation, lower heart disease risk, decrease blood sugar levels, and improve insulin sensitivity.
  • Apple cider vinegar may help improve fasting blood sugar levels, but more research is needed to confirm its health benefits.
  • Strawberries are low sugar fruits that have strong anti-inflammatory properties and may help improve insulin resistance.
  • Garlic helps lower blood sugar, inflammation, LDL cholesterol, and blood pressure in people with diabetes.
  • Summer and winter squash contain beneficial antioxidants and may help lower blood sugar. The glucomannan in shirataki noodles promotes feelings of fullness and can improve blood sugar management and cholesterol levels.

Other possible factors to consider

  • Lose weight. Less body fat can lower your uric acid levels and improve your blood sugar. Prevent destructive fasting or a crash diet. Quick weight loss can raise uric acid.
  • Exercise. Try to get at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day.
  • Manage other health issues. If you have other problems, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or kidney disease, make sure to take care of them.
